Avoiding colds and flu - thank-you Kate Winslet

I'm hardly an expert, but I will say after changing a few simple habits last winter I escaped both colds and the dreaded flu for the whole season. And I have Kate Winslet to thank for it.

Let me explain.

Did you ever see the movie Contagion? It was a film that made you feel like never leaving the house again for fear of deadly viruses. Anyway, one scene stuck in my mind. The characters are talking about disease vectors and how the titular contagion spreads. She explains if people would just stop touching their faces, the virus wouldn't have as good an opportunity to enter the body.

So simple. After that I made a great effort to stop touching my mouth, nose and eyes so much, particularly during/after being out in public.

The one other thing that I started doing was paying attention to hand washing. Really. I now wash my hands whenever I enter a new building or before eating, in addition to post-lavatorial visits.

And I wash them properly. Not doctor-level fussiness but I take at least ten seconds to scrub with soap (or just water if no soap available- I'm told it's nearly as effective?). And then I take the same amount of time to rinse. Dry thoroughly. Damp hands are not hygienic, probably.

Thus it is I am now horrified when people literally dash their hands under the tap, shake and leave.

Anyways, there are of course many other things you can do to help avoid the winter lurgy and stay healthy, most of which I'm sure you are aware.

- Eat heaps of fresh fruit and veges.

- If you need to sneeze, do it into a tissue or the crook of your elbow.

- Minimise contact with door handles if possible.

- Cover your mouth when you cough (and don't touch your face after!)

- Get the flu shot!

As I said, I'm no doctor but I was very surprised the difference these simple changes of habit made to my health in winter, am I'll be doing them again this year!

What do you do to avoid colds and flu?

Doctors

In the past week, I've been to the doctor twice. It's a new medical practice for me, as my usual one couldn't fit me in on Saturday. This new one, it's like a goddamn ghost town. I was the only person in the waiting room today. Think about it - when't the last time that happened to you?

Anyways, I'm quite sure the lovely doctor thinks I'm crazy. On Saturday he checked my temp, looked in my throat and said all's well. Today I went in to get a medical certificate and he did the EXACT SAME THING and said it's just a virus, you'll be fine, take some panadeine for the headache and rest. One final piece of wisdom - he told me to "do right things". I asked him what he meant, he said no alcohol, go to bed early, eat right. Good advice any old time, I reckon.

Sickly Lurgy

I have The Lurgy. That's what my Scottish friend Annie always used to call it. That winter sickness of varying symptoms, that makes you look like a bad, older, more crumpled version of your usual self. The stuffed sinuses, the runny nose, the fever, the coughing...

My own personal symptoms so far are a sore throat. That's it. I'm beginning to think I was a little over-zealous going to the doctor this morning. But I just KNOW it's going to develop into full-blown tonsillitis over the next few days - it always does! I think the doctor was laughing at me quietly. He took my ear temperature, said it was normal. Looked in my throat, announced there was no pus, no swelling. He told me kindly to gargle some paracetamol (a remedy heretofore I had never heard of! good one doc!) and to come back if it got worse.

So I went and bought a few more little sickness-fighting remedies of my own. Lemons, orange juice (pure! pulp and all!), Strepsils, Vapo-drops and Lucozade. My dear fiancee put me onto the healing benefits of Lucozade. I'm fairly sure they are mostly psycological, but hey, always makes me feel better!

Wish me luck in fighting this infection folks.

On flu

With news reports saying that this year's flu season will be even worst than the last, I can actually see myself turning into a young, female version of Howard Hughes.
You see, I hate being sick. Yes, I love time off work (doesn't every body?) but it's hardly ever worth it when you feel so bad. You can't even enjoy the best things in life - like eating, reading, or tv - properly because you just feel so awful. On the upside, sleeping becomes a hobby, or even a sport.
I'm giving serious thought to public transport during this Autumn/Winter and am considering paying for parking in the city just to avoid it. I just don't want to be somewhere where people sneeze into their hands then put them on a pole, or a handhold. Or cough on all the people within a 2m radius. I don't know about you, but hearing one of those hacking, chesty coughs that sound like bronchitis immediately make me feel sickly.
And yet, I haven't seriously considered getting a flu needle. There are apparently two types of vaccination this year - one for swine flu, and one for the latest strain of influenza. My mum gets them every year, but she's a teacher and you know kids; walking virus factories...
If anyone has an opinion, I'm interested. Should I get the vaccination? Or rely on natural immunity to get me through the flu season?
